Icebergs are now at high risk of melting down due to global warming which is now posing a red alert to the living world. Now, the largest iceberg is adding it up to the list.
BBC says, the world’s largest iceberg, A23a which is almost three times the size of the New York City is all set to move for the first time in more than three decades. The huge iceberg is almost 4,000 square km (1,500 square miles) in area is on the move in the Antarctic Ocean.
Scientists have shown us some satellite images that indicate the iceberg, weighing almost a trillion metric tonnes, ismoving briskly past the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, impelled by strong winds and currents.
This kind of speedy movement is very much unusual for an iceberg.According to the glaciologists, if it continues to move in such speed,
It is expected to be propelled into the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, where other icebergs of similar size can be observed floating in the dark waters.
The reason of this iceberg, moving away is unclean. It is guessed that possibly it might just got tinned out over time and so the buoyancy allowed it to lift off the ocean floor and sweep away by ocean currents.
Now the question is, can A23a become lodged again?
Well, There is a chance that A23a might become lodged again, at South Georgia island, presenting a concern for Antarctica’s wildlife. This island is a breeding ground for millions of seals, penguins, and seabirds, and they depend on the surrounding waters for foraging. The colossal A23a could potentially block their access to these crucial areas.
Let’s hope nothing goes wrong and life sustains.
