In India, several regional languages are cultured, practised and learned butHindi is the national language and English is the most-celebrated international language that is learned thoroughly as it is very much needed to build a career. Indian schools and colleges prefer the British English and there are several reasons to do so.
Firstly, the British English is considered as the most prestigious and professional form of English. Secondly, British English is accepted globally as it is more formal and rich than the American English and thirdly, many Indians believe that British English is the more appropriate form of writing .
Therefore, British English had been enforced in Indians schools and colleges to make it the only form of English taught in the classrooms. Though American English is nowadays practiced and spoken as it is more colloquial, textbooks, dictionaries and online learning materialsare mostly written in the British English.
There are various challenges to enforce British English in Indian schools and colleges. As many Indians prefer the American English due to influence of American tv shows, movies, books and all, there is a shortage of British English teachers in India. Few people even stated that enforcing the British English is a cultural imperialism. But irrespective the oddities, the British English is still the only form of English taught in classrooms. Though enforcing the British English is a complex issue, yet it is worth-considering as this language is more rich and eloquent whether it is spoken or written.
